3D Prescription Glasses and the Future

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I remember the old 3D glasses of yore, the red and blue paper thin lenses, that first thrilling sensation of seeing something virtually reaching towards your from the screen. 3D movies have come a long way, and it’s paved a new path for the film industry, Avatar being the most recent and notable film within the genre. This visual technology has massive applications that stretches beyond films, this trend towards visual realism has extended into the video game industry as well such as the anticipated debut of Final Fantasy XIII for the latest Playstation platform which boasts seamless graphics unlike any game that has preceded it. As CGI and 3D capabilities become more widely used in different industries, it’s only a matter of time before 3D glasses take on a more permanent role than the recyclable disposables moviegoers chuck into the bin outside the theater. Some have surmised that prescription 3D glasses may be a consideration. And is it all that surprising? The only 3D glasses that are available for the consumer are lenses that fit over regular prescription glasses which can prove to be annoying. Technology is advancing at neck break speed, and it’s only a matter of time before we start making these sorts of accommodations for the sake of visual realism.
